One of "ten best" resorts featured in Washingtonian Magazine (September, 2001)

Wintergreen Resort is truly a 4-season resort.  If you're into sports, Wintergreen is the place for you:  Skiing, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Hiking, and Horseback Riding are major attractions.  On the other hand, if you like quiet walks in the woods, curling up by the fireplace, or sitting on the deck reading a good book, Wintergreen is for you, too, surrounded by oak and hickory, atop the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Activity headings are linked to Wintergreen Resort web pages. Use your browser's "BACK" button to return to this page.

Wintergreen boasts 45 holes of championship greens.  Eighteen holes are located on Devil's Knob mountain -- at 4,000 feet, Virginia's highest golf course.  In the valley, the Stoney Creek courses add another 27 holes to challenge your game, and is open year round.  The Wintergreen Golf Academy is Virginia's oldest full-time golf school.
Wintergreen tennis has been rated among the nation's top 50 tennis programs for 15 consecutive years.  Devil's Knob and Stoney Creek together feature 19 clay courts, with three indoor deco turf courts at Devil's Knob Pavilion.  The Tennis Academy programs are consistently highly rated.
The Wintergreen Nature Foundation maintains 30 miles of hiking trails at all levels of difficulty, from leisurely strolls to strenuous workouts.  (The Old Appalachian Trail runs through the resort.)  Follow the markers on your own, or join a hike led by a Wintergreen Nature Foundation naturalist.
Lake Monocan
Wintergreen's 20-acre Lake Monocan is staffed with a lifeguard from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on weekends in May and September. The lake offers a snack bar, sand beach, shaded and sunny lounge chairs. The picnic area offers tables and outdoor charcoal grills. Lakefront activities include picnicking, volleyball, horseshoe pits, paddleboats, canoes, kayaks, road bikes, inline skates, inner tubes, fishing poles, and equipment.
Aquatics and Fitness
Wintergreen boasts six pools: The Wintergardet Spa and Fitness Center indoor pool offers year-round swimming. Five outdoor pools are open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The Fitness Center features a 12-station strength and conditioning circuit, free weights, treadmills, stationary bicycles, and a stair stepper. The resort also offers several classes and personal fitness training.

The Discovery Ridge adventure center features miniature golf, in-line skating, mountain biking, mountain boarding, a bungee trampoline, paintball, a 25-foot climbing tower, basketball, volleyball, and a skateboard park with half-pipes and quarter-pipes. Equipment is available for rent. Discovery Ridge is located next to the tubing hills and is open all year long!
Children's Activities
While you're enjoying the adult activities, your kids will be busy with one of the many planned activities for children.  Ski lessons, hikes, nature programs tennis and golf clinics, swimming, crafts, and games for the younger set; canoeing, rock-climbing and wilderness hiking for the older ones. The Resort can also help you arrange for a babysitter.
After all that activity, you might be too tired to cook.  No Problem!  Wintergreen has a wide assortment of restaurants, snack bars, lounges, and a deli featuring great sandwiches and pizza. Refer to What's Nearby for more information.
